Dear Readers,
In 2025, the Max Weber Institute organised Góry Zarządzania (Management Mountains), with the main theme being the identity of Lower Silesia's inhabitants. It was an inspiring conference grounded in scholarly reflection and experiences drawn from diaries, memoirs, and autobiographies. During the conference, many postulates were formulated, including the need for systematic collection and analysis of materials in this field, which are currently dispersed across cultural centres, libraries, academic institutions, and private collections. This would enable the inventorying of resources and the conduct of reliable academic research.
The Institute also completed work on the Development Strategy for the Municipality of Międzybórz and, as in previous years, prepared Reports on the State of the Municipalities of Szczawno-Zdrój, Dobromierz, and Czarny Bór. In addition, several communication training sessions were conducted, and reports were developed outlining opportunities for companies and local governments to obtain external funding.
The world we live in is becoming increasingly noisy and increasingly superficial, while societies are returning to basic needs, pushing higher-order needs into the background. As a result, populists are winning more often, and governance methods are becoming increasingly brutal. At the same time, this picture is overlaid by the rapidly accelerating development of the information society, which, in my view, will further widen the distance between social groups and individuals. We will drift ever further apart from one another in intellectual, cognitive, and also material terms. This lack of cohesion will, unfortunately, give rise to new demons and conflicts.
Yet in such turbulent times, we should seek a return to fundamental values, such as the love of one's neighbour, which has so often protected humanity and the individual human being from annihilation. This is what I wish for you and for myself.
